In Spring, the bare branches of our deciduous trees may reveal nests of the many birds that depend on Rossmoor trees for food and shelter. Several species of birds make their home here including hummingbirds, falcons, sparrows, warblers, finches and bluebirds, just to name a few. It is important to know that under the California Fish and Game Code, sections 3505 and 3503.5, It is unlawful to take, possess, or needlessly destroy the nest or eggs of any bird. Nest disturbances that lead to egg loss or abandonment of young birds can be punishable by hefty fines and/or imprisonment. Ideally, trees should not be pruned during the bird nesting season which can be from February to August. If a tree does need pruning during these months, it is important to inspect the tree for nests beforehand and to avoid disturbing or removing the nest. If an entire nest falls or is accidentally knocked from the tree, try and place it back where it came from. If this is not possible, move it to a safe location where the mother may find it again. If you find a baby bird that has fallen from the nest, carefully place it back in its nest or leave the bird where you found it so its mother can take care of it or place in safer location if needed. It is a myth that a mother bird won’t feed her baby once it is touched by a human.
